AMC Cheddar hike April 2026

For the second hike of the year, seven of us plus two dogs took in the ups and downs of Cheddar and the surrounding area.

The route took us up one side of Cheddar gorge in the sunshine. From the top we could see across the Bristol channel as far as Minehead.

Upon reaching the highest point of the day and also the mendips (Beacon Batch), we grabbed a quick group photo in the sun before being treated to an unexpected hailstorm. 

There was a small deviation from the planned route when Tim convinced us all to turn right out of Rowberrow Warren. This detour took us directly to the local pub for a much needed sit down and a pint.

After lunch, the walk continued back down to Cheddar via Axbridge and the Strawberry line. 

We made it back to to cars after 7 hours, having completed 23km in total. My ambitious estimates to complete the walk in 4.5 hours had luckily been forgotten.

I'll leave you with the comment of the day from Sanders who exclaimed at one point. 

"This is the bougiest hike I've ever been on!"
