Who are we
The Avon Mountaineering Club, based in Bristol, brings together people who share a passion for climbing and walking. Our members regularly meet to enjoy outdoor and mountain-related activities.
Founded in 1972, the club is affiliated with the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) and boasts a diverse membership of over 150 people. From highly experienced climbers and seasoned mountaineers to those just starting their journey, the AMC offers something for everyone.
What we do
We offer an annual itinerary of weekend trips featuring climbing, bouldering, scrambling, and walking, in stunning destinations such as Wales, the Lake District, the Peak District, Scotland, Lundy Island, the Avon Gorge, and the Wye Valley. We also climb indoors at the many climbing gyms around Bristol.
During the summer, trips are typically scheduled twice a month, and in winter once a month. Additionally, we host a popular monthly social meet on the first Monday of every month at the Golden Guinea pub in Redcliffe, providing a great opportunity to connect with fellow members.
How we work
Our club trips are organised by members on a voluntary basis. Each year, we set out a calendar of weekend trips and longer excursions for the coming 12 months. Members also volunteer to arrange ad-hoc trips, both locally and abroad.
All club correspondence is managed through our mailing list and through our website, where members share trip information, club-related news, and connect to find climbing and walking partners.
The AMC also maintains a library of guidebooks, maps and some basic mountaineering equipment that members can borrow.
Why Join
As a club member, you gain access to our regular climbing, mountaineering and walking meets (see our meet reports on the homepage for recent examples).
We run weekly local meets year round (indoors in the winter).
We organise weekends away in the UK, and longer trips abroad. Accommodation is made easy by pre-booking huts or campsites, and transport is organised through lift sharing. This also helps to make trips more affordable.
Attendees often connect in advance to introduce anyone coming along solo, ensuring no one is left out. While we do not offer formal instruction, there are often members willing to team up with those who are less experienced (please also see joining requirements on the Join page).
Members are invited to meet in a pub once per month and we host a Christmas party each December. The annual general meeting takes place each November.
Membership also provides access to the club forum, where members can organise ad-hoc activities and social events.
Joining the club cost only £37 per calendar year and includes affiliate membership of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC). This includes third-party liability insurance and a reduced rate to to upgrade to full membership. (If you are already a BMC member or are a member of another BMC-affiliated club, the difference can be refunded by the BMC by filling out a form.)
