Swanage is best know for its tidal trad, which due to Storm Kathleen causing large swells it was going to be tricky. The majority opted for the in-land crags, with a few of us abseiling into the few dry lines available.

With the wet weather causing the campsites to delay opening the Swanage trip almost failed before it began. Thankfully some last minute booking of the YHA allowed it to go ahead and with the added bonus of a roof over our heads!

The first day saw us head to Hedbury Quarry to sample the sport on offer. Despite being injured i climbed (don’t tell my physio!) a number of the more easy routes (Another Contribution 2a and Sea view 3a). Being an excellent place to build your confidence up Lucy led her first 5a (Moral Flexibility).

In the afternoon we moved over to play on the some more serious climbing with Malcom and Anita leading of mince and Men (6b) and Connor & Will on Moves for the Masses (6a) & Jumping the Gun (6b).

With the sun setting we retreated back to the YHA for a group meal of Dhal and a rather contentious game of pass the pigs, which was won by our high stake gambler Malcom.

Determined to get some Trad in on the Sunday we headed off to St Aldhelm’s, Where Andy led Gardener’s Question Time (VD). Other assents included The other gully (S), One nut crack (VS 5a) and Pinnacle Gully Gully (VD).

Alongside the climbing there was plenty of opportunity for wildlife watching with nesting birds, hares, lizards and even a snake (which almost came back to Bristol via a climbing bag). All things considered was a good start to the climbing season and a good example of making the most of the weather!
