About

Who we are

The Avon Mountaineering Club is a Bristol-based club for people who share a passion for climbing and walking and regularly meet to enjoy outdoor/mountain related activities. Founded in 1972, we are BMC affiliated and have over 150 members of differing levels of experience ranging from highly experienced climbers and seasoned mountaineers to those just getting started.

What we do

We have an annual itinerary of weekend trips which takes us climbing, bouldering, scrambling and walking in Wales, The Lake District, The Peak District, Scotland, Lundy Island, the Avon Gorge and Wye Valley as well as indoors at the many Bristol climbing walls. Typically trips are programmed twice a month in the summer and once a month in the winter.

We have a monthly social meet which is well attended on the first Wednesday of every month at the Nova Scotia pub in Hotwells.

How we work

Our club trips are organised by members on a voluntary basis. Each year we set out a calendar for weekends away and also longer trips for the coming 12 months. Members also volunteer to organise ad-hoc trips either locally or abroad.

All correspondence within the club is undertaken through the club mailing list where members post trip information and other club related news and where members can find partners for climbing and walking. The AMC also have a library of guidebook, maps and DVDs which members can borrow.

Potential New Members

If you are thinking about joining the club then please come along to meet us at the pub to decide if it’s the club for you. Details as to what the club can offer and further information is provided in the Why Join section.
