Ogwen Valley Jan 2023

The club ran a trip from 19-21st January, staying in the Midland Association of Mountaineers hut in Ogwen Valley. Another trip to the same location is booked for Feb 16-18th.

Matt and Andy got the best of the weather turning up early and ticked some ice in Cwm Idwal.

The rest arrived through the Friday evening. Lisa and I immediately walked up to Cwm Lloer by moonlight to plod around in some snow.

With a worsening forecast some strong decisions were made over breakfast on Saturday.

Max took Greg and Olly scrambling on Milestone buttress.

Matt, Andy, Steve and Kane went in search of more winter stuff, Steve and Kane managed to swing their axes into some snow on Tower gully.

Maria and Matt went for a hike round Lyn Ogwen at valley level to avoid the wind.

Lisa and I drove out of the weather to tick Tal Y Fan and do some navigation practice.

Everyone made it off the hill in time for a pint and free avalanche lecture at Plas Y Brenin. (There are usually free lectures next to the bar every evening, worth emailing in advance to check.)

Sunday and an even worse forecast led to some even stronger decisions.

Kane, Steve and Olly braved snakes and ladders in the Llanberis slate quarries, wisely binning it when the weather became too much.

Matt, Max, Lisa, Greg and I went for another bracing navigation walk from Sygur Copper Mines to Nantmor over the tops, then back via the exciting path next to the Afon Glaslyn. Coffee and cake in Beddgelert then back on flooded back roads to the car.

We all rendezvoused in Betws before fixing our snorkels for the drive home. Rescuing defeat from the jaws of success I managed to flood the car while fording a flood. Luckily a bit of time to dry out and a jump start got us on our way. I forgot you don’t want a massive bow wave, sorry Bob (the Audi).
