AMC Spring Newsletter

Welcome to our Spring newsletter!

It seems such a long time ago that I sent out the winter one. We seem to have been hiding inside for too long, or venturing outside in MANY layers!! Finally it feels hopeful, spring-like and I am happily making plans for some adventures in the year ahead.

It is wonderful to be able to update everyone on what is going on, and coming up in the AMC.

If you have something you would like us to include in our newsletters, then please let me know and I will add it into the next one. It would be great to be able to report back on what our club members are getting up too.

A very warm welcome to our all new members! We look forward to sharing adventures with you all.

Don’t forget to read any trip reports that have been put up to stay super psyched for upcoming trips too!

Meet our new Trips secretary……

Hi, I’m Gwenver, the new trips secretary! I have been climbing a few years and a member of the AMC for one. I enjoy walking up hills too but don’t do it as often! I’m also organising the peak district meet. Looking forward to heading back up north and climbing on grit (hopefully in glorious sunshine!).

Evening outdoor climbing meets starting up again!

Evening outdoor sessions will be starting up after the Easter Holidays around the 26th April. We will have a full schedule up soon on the forum to help you all plan your time.

This year will be a mix of sport and trad climbing making full use of the great selection of venues we have available to use, only a short drive from Bristol, or actually in Bristol!!

Some of these meets are also a great way to make the transition from indoor to outdoor climbing or learn more about ‘trad’ climbing. If you are a novice and wish to come along, please contact the organiser to see if the meet you are interested in,is suitable for you to attend.

If you are new to the AMC then these meets are also a fantastic way to get to know other club members before heading out on longer trips. If this is you, then please always contact the organiser to say hello and give them an idea of your experience.

New Joining instructions

We are currently reviewing how the AMC functions, and one thing that has changed is the way you can join the club.

We welcome new members and suggest they come along to meet us all at the monthly pub meets. Following on from this a joining link will be sent out to the interested perspective member. It is no longer possible to simply join on the website.

We hope this will allow us to meet all members needs more effectively and provide a more personal touch….

We have a flag!!

Here is our new lovely flag…. thank you Jamie for sorting this out.

BMC COURSES-

The BMC have a good selection of courses running, both in person and online. I have chosen a few that you might be interested in, but please check out the BMC’s website for many more!

Women ready to rock-

A one day course aimed at women who wish to build up their skills for outdoor climbing. A good selection of dates available

The BMC are running a hiking essentials series of workshops online bookable through Eventbrite.

These include navigation and emergencies. Please follow link below-

Keeping us all safe. South west bolting.

A big thank you to Steve Menadue for his comprehensive report on the bolts at Brean a few weeks ago. Lots of us enjoy climbing at Brean; a high-quality sport crag on the beach!! What’s not to like….

But how many of us question the bolts we are happily clipping? I recommend you check out Steve’s report on the FB group ‘Bristol climbing friends’ to find out more

This might inspire you to donate to the bolt fund that pays for the bolts, allowing us to enjoy top quality climbing in a safe way.

Further to this him and Matt Langley are involved in the re-equipping of Wyntours Leap with new pegs and, where appropriate, bolts on the belays.

Thank you both for your efforts.

Upcoming trips!

Finally we are getting out into some spring sunshine, warmer rock and gorgeous mountains.

We have the trip to North Wales and the Peak District ready to roll as well as the Skye trip beginning to gain momentum. If you are interested in these trips then please do email the organiser to let them know a little bit about you and what you are hoping to do on the trips, even if it just drink beer around a fire….. J

All the weekend and longer trips are on the calendar, so check them out and make a note in your diary of the ones you are interested in so you don’t miss out!

Our sport trip to Kalymnos in October has already filled up, with a few on the waiting list! I am pretty psyched to organise this one!!

We don’t just climb!

We don’t just climb. A great day out was had by a few of us and my dogs Suzi and Flo on the Brecon Beacons recently. Suzi created an instant bond with Mark and a joyous day was had romping together and throwing sticks…..

(Thank you Peter for the cake and tea!!)

AMC Library update-

Just a reminder we have an excellent library for all members to use for free. Whether you are a boulderer, sport and/or trad climber our stocked library is worth a browse. Latest editions are: Culm Coast which is a must for any trad climbing – sea climbing in my favourite county, Devon; Or why not try out ‘Esoteric’ bouldering in Bristol area. I recently found a 7b project right under my nose; or What about some sport climbing in Scotland. We have two books covering all north and south Scotland. And yes it is mega! Access it via the AMC web page and select Library. Once found the book would like, send me text on 07467 912007 Happy climbing.

Want to get involved with the AMC?

Getting involved with the club is a great way to not only meet other super psyched outdoor people, but a way to give a little back too. We always need trip organisers for longer weekend trips as well as the evening meets too. Just get in touch with a member of the committee. We would love to hear from you.

And finally….

It is so nice to be able to finish this busy newsletter with some great news of one of members brilliant achievement!

A huge congratulations to Charlie who has passed his ML

What a fantastic achievement. Charlie has worked so hard over the last 2 years making this happen and we wish him all the best in his new ventures as a mountain leader.
