Under 18s in the Avon Mountaineering Club

The AMC welcomes under 18s to the Club. This statement sets out the Club’s position and should be read by all members of the AMC.

All AMC members should be aware that the Club welcomes under 18s when accompanied by their parent or guardian or member acting in loco parentis. If a club member is asked to act in loco parentis by a parent or guardian they can choose to accept or decline. Acting in loco parentis is an arrangement between the parent or guardian and the club member. The term ‘in loco parentis’ means ‘acting in the place of the parent’ i.e. this requires the club member to exercise a duty of care that would be provided by a reasonably prudent parent. When taking someone’s else’s child on an activity the club member should advise the parent or guardian about the nature of the activities to be undertaken and any arrangements so that they can decide whether they are happy with these or decline the offer if they are not.

Under 18s may join the AMC providing that:

1. Their parent or guardian joins the AMC with the under 18 and both complete membership forms (indicating their relationship) and pay their subscriptions;
2. They only climb with their parent or guardian or a member acting in loco parentis or in a roped party including their parent or guardian or member acting in loco parentis;
3. They are accompanied on any walks by their parent or guardian or member acting in loco parentis;
4. Their parent or guardian or member acting in loco parentis supervises them at all times when attending any AMC trip or activity and takes sole and full responsibility for them;
5. They can attend club trips away over night, however for winter hut trips their sleeping arrangements must be decided by their parent or guardian or member acting in loco parentis in conjunctino with the trip organiser.
6. Access to the email list is restricted to their parent or guardian only.
